Call first, and ask the specific question. "Do you handle emergencies?" gets a yes from almost everyone. "If I come in today, will you treat it today?" gets you a real answer, and it is the one that determines whether you spend the evening in pain. Ask what the emergency visit costs and whether it is credited against treatment.
Know which problems cannot wait and which can. A knocked-out adult tooth is measured in minutes. Spreading swelling is an emergency room problem. Almost everything else — a lost crown, a cracked edge, a manageable ache — is better handled by a practice that can see you properly tomorrow than by whoever can see you at nine tonight.
Antibiotics are not a fix, and a practice that only prescribes them has not finished. An abscess is drained or the tooth is treated; antibiotics buy time and reduce swelling so that treatment is possible. If you are given a prescription and no follow-up appointment, book one.
Once it is dealt with, find a regular dentist. Emergency care is the most expensive way to buy dentistry and the least likely to give you continuity — you are seen by whoever is available, without the history that makes good decisions easier. If the emergency was the first sign of a problem that had been building, that is the strongest argument for a routine practice you actually see twice a year.
