Las Vegas City Council Ratifies New Public Works Director
Acting Director Promoted To Position
At today’s meeting, the Las Vegas City Council unanimously ratified Michael Cunningham as the new director of Public Works. Cunningham was selected for the position by City Manager Mike Janssen.
In his new role, Cunningham, a professional engineer and certified building official, will oversee the planning, design, construction and maintenance of municipal infrastructure including wastewater and storm water management, transportations sytems and capital improvement projects..
Cunningham, who has been with the city since 2014, previously served as the acting director for the Public Works Department. Prior to that, Cunningham led the city’s Building & Safety Division as a deputy director for nine years, where he managed building inspections and permitting across the city. Before that, he managed land development and he was designated as the city’s certified building official in 2023.
Prior to his time at the city, Cunningham worked in the private sector as a civil engineer, and before that began his career as an intern with the city’s Public Works Department.
Cunningham was born and raised in Las Vegas and graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He has served as a board member with the American Public Works Association and is a past president of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council. He is registered as a professional engineer in Nevada and California.
