Las Vegas residents and workers who want a behind-the-scenes look at city law enforcement can now apply for the city’s 2026 Citizens Police Academy. The free program meets Wednesday evenings from late August through mid-November, but applications are due July 29 and space is limited.
What the academy is
The Citizens Police Academy is a free, voluntary program offered by the city\u2019s Department of Public Safety. It is meant to give community members a closer look at how local law enforcement services work in Las Vegas, including functions handled by deputy city marshals, the city detention center and animal protection services. The city notes that the academy is not a job offer or employment program.
Dates and schedule
Classes are scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., running Aug. 26 through Nov. 18, 2026. There will be no class on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
Who can attend
Applicants must live or work in the city of Las Vegas, be at least 18 years old and have no felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor convictions. Space is limited, and selection is not automatic.
What participants will learn
The academy covers a range of public safety and law enforcement topics, including patrol operations, arrests, search and seizure, bike patrol, motorcycle patrol, case law, use of force, custody operations, animal protection and how calls for service are processed.
How to apply
Applications are due by July 29, 2026. The city is accepting applications online through its Citizens Police Academy form. Selected applicants will go through a background check and a brief phone interview before they are enrolled.
