How we rank trails

The methodology behind our "best hikes near Las Vegas" guides — separate from how we rank business listings, which is a different system entirely.

What goes into a ranking

Each list starts from official land-manager data (distance, elevation gain, fees, permit and reservation rules) cross-checked against on-the-ground trail-condition reports, then ordered by editorial judgment against whatever the list is actually about — hardest, shortest, most scenic, most accessible, and so on. As real hiker-submitted reports accumulate for a trail (time taken, parking difficulty, crowding), those get folded in too. Until then, that data is our own estimate, and we say so on the page rather than presenting a guess as a fact.

How often it gets refreshed

Different parts of a guide go stale at different rates, so each is refreshed on its own schedule instead of waiting for a full rewrite:

Continuous
The report count and "as of" date at the bottom of each list, and the rankings themselves, update automatically as hiker feedback accumulates.
Seasonal (~15 minutes, ahead of each season)
Fees, permits, reservation systems, and known closures — the details that actually change with the calendar and matter to someone about to drive out there.
Annual, or immediately when something material happens
A full editorial re-read once a year at minimum — sooner if a trail closes, a fee changes, or a reservation system launches.
