Price the finished tooth, not the procedure. A root canal quote that does not mention the crown is describing roughly half of what it costs to end up with a working tooth. Ask for both together, and ask whether the practice does the crown itself or refers it back to your general dentist — which is the usual arrangement when an endodontist does the treatment.
Ask what the alternative is, and what it costs. The honest comparison is usually root canal plus crown against extraction plus an implant or bridge, and the root canal is very often the cheaper and more conservative option — keeping your own tooth generally beats replacing it. A practice that moves straight to extraction on a restorable tooth is worth a second opinion.
Do not wait for the pain to come back. A tooth that has quietened down after antibiotics has not healed; the infection has been suppressed. The window where treatment is straightforward closes as the tooth deteriorates, and the difference between treating it this month and next year is frequently the difference between keeping it and losing it.
Book the crown when you book the treatment, and confirm where each happens. The most common way to lose a successfully root-treated tooth is to leave it under a temporary filling because the crown appointment never got made — and that is likelier when the treatment was done at a referred practice some distance away and the crown is a separate trip. Make both appointments at once.
