Decide first whether you want a family practice or a specialist. One practice for everybody means one trip, one set of records and a child who watches a parent do it calmly first — which is worth more than it sounds. A pediatric specialist is the better call for a very young child, an anxious one, a child with additional needs, or anything likely to need sedation.
Ask what happens when a child will not cooperate, before you need the answer. Every practice meets this, and the approaches differ: some reschedule, some use nitrous oxide, some refer on, some are equipped for full sedation. None of those is wrong, but you want to know which one you have chosen rather than finding out in the moment.
Check the coverage question early. Children’s dental benefits are usually the most generous part of any plan, and Nevada Check Up covers eligible children, but participation varies practice by practice. Henderson has enough family practices within a short drive that a couple of phone calls will find one that takes your plan without compromising on distance — and distance is what determines whether the twice-yearly appointments actually happen.
Judge the practice on prevention, not on how good it is at fillings. The measure of a children’s dentist is how few restorations your child needs by the time the adult teeth are through. That means sealants applied on time, fluoride at check-ups, and a practice willing to spend part of the appointment on brushing and diet — the least glamorous part of the visit, and the part that decides the next ten years.
